Application Examples

Thermal sprayed coatings offer many advantages including cost savings, improved performance, reduced downtime, and increased design flexibility. The following are some specific examples to illustrate how our customers have benefited from our coatings.

A GRIPPING STORY

Thermal sprayed coatings helped a sheet metal manufacturing company with their gripping problem. They manufacture "sheet metal clamps" that are used to grab pieces of sheet metal and move them around. These clamps were originally knurled, then case hardened to provide the edge of the clamp with a gripping surface that was also wear resistant. Unfortunately, the clamps wore out too quickly.

Now, Precision Coatings, Inc. coats the edge of the clamp with a very hard tungsten carbide material. Our coating lasts longer and provides both excellent wear resistance and a textured surface for gripping.

A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO PLATING

A company came to us to solve a problem with their cam for a high pressure water pump. They were making the cam out of tool steel and then having it chrome plated. The chrome plating was not holding up and would flake and peel.

We helped them redesign the cam so that it could be made by plastic injection molding and then ceramic coated, ground, and lapped by Precision Coatings, Inc. As a result of this design change, the ceramic coated cam outperformed the chrome plated cam.

CERAMIC SEAL SURFACE

Precision Coatings plasma coats and diamond grinds a critical seal surface for a food processing assembly. The seal surface is very corrosion resistant and wear resistant. Before the ceramic coating, the 316 stainless steel surface corroded and wore out in only a few months. Now the shaft has a service life of several years.

NYLON® COATED PRINTING ROLLS

Precision Coatings works with a variety of commercial printers, resurfacing their precise inking rolls. The printers' inking rolls are coated, machined to size, then highly polished to provide a superior surface for ink wetting and flow. The coated rolls are also very abrasion resistant.

CERAMIC COATED PUMP PISTON

Precision Coatings ceramic coats and grinds a water pump piston used in a desalinization pump. The coating provides superior corrosion resistance from sea water as well as excellent wear resistance. The coated surface also functions as a seal surface.

CARBIDE ON ALUMINUM PLATES

Precision Coatings applies a very hard, durable tungsten carbide onto aluminum particle separator plates for outstanding wear resistance. The plates are used to pulverize and classify abrasive powdered materials, and operate at high RPM. The lightweight aluminum allows for the high speed rotation, while the dense, hard carbide resists the abrasion.

HIGHLY POLISHED, HARD CERAMIC ON ALUMINUM TUBE

We coat 1/2" diameter x 9" long aluminum tubes with ceramic to provide electrical insulation, as well as provide excellent wear resistance. Precision Coatings then grinds and laps the ceramic coating to an 8 microinch surface finish or less.
